BigBand Networks' Doug Jones Receives SCTE IP Innovator Award
SCTE acknowledges Jones for contributions to the development of DOCSIS® specifications and the genesis of cable broadband
January 24, 2007
HOUSTON – Jan. 24, 2007 – BigBand Networks, Inc., a leading provider of broadband multimedia infrastructure for video, voice and data, announced that Doug Jones, its chief cable architect, received the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers 2007 IP Innovator Award. The prestigious award is presented annually and recognizes one SCTE member who has displayed innovative achievement and creativity in the advancement and development of IP networking. This year’s award is sponsored by Juniper Networks.
"I am honored that the SCTE has recognized my contributions to the advancement of IP networking, “said Jones. "I have had the opportunity to work with many incredibly talented people throughout my career and am proud of the collective work that we’ve done to help make broadband a reality.”
Throughout the course of a 20-year career, Jones has been a significant contributor to some of the cable industry’s most significant IP innovations projects, including pioneering development work on the early CableLabs®’ DOCSIS® and CableHome® specifications. Arguably his most significant achievement came when the first DOCSIS products passed certification in 1999. At that moment, for the first time, cable operators had a standardized, low-cost, interoperable method available to carry IP traffic over HFC networks; the genesis of what is now referred to as “cable broadband.” While his early work on DOCSIS helped to enable high-speed Internet service for the cable industry, Jones has since contributed on projects that include Voice-over-IP, home networking, commercial services and adding IP functionality to set-top boxes. Doug’s recent efforts to advance modular-CMTS and DOCSIS 3.0 functionality at BigBand Networks can set the stage for the delivery of converged video, voice and data services over an entirely IP infrastructure; perhaps the next great IP innovation milestone for the cable industry.
“Doug Jones is an integral part of our team and we’re proud of both his past contributions to cable, and the important work he is continuing at BigBand Networks,” said Ran Oz, BigBand’s chief technical officer. “His experience, passion and dedication to cable are evident in everything he does, and we’re very lucky to have him here to support our own video, data and voice innovation.”
Jones was honored today, and presented with a special award at SCTE's Conference on Emerging Technologies annual awards luncheon in Houston. For more information about SCTE awards programs, visit www.scte.org.
